Introduction

When thinking back about what I learned in social studies class, it is difficult for me to remember anything in particular.  It was a different time back then, especially when it comes to teaching, where the resources available now weren't there before.  We are growing in a time where we can have access to a wide variety of information by simply pressing a few keys and clicking whatever we desire.

Social studies offers a variety of contexts for students to learn.  What is different about social studies is how topics can be linked in many different ways that are relate-able to our everyday lives.  Especially when it comes to being financially literate, it can play a huge part in being able to trade things with friends and family members, which then the skills developed can be transferred into everyday life.  Seeing how previous civilizations traded with each other, or how they interacted with the environment are only some of the interesting topics taught in elementary schools today.  Comparing this to present day, you can see how much people have evolved and learned from the past.

With technology growing at an exponential rate, social studies offers many ways in incorporating technology into class.  Using iPads, various online resources and Smartboards, students can become involved in a more direct way and hopefully be able to remember it when recalling their social studies experience.

It is said that we are in the golden age of information; and for that reason it would be a shame not to be exposed to it.
